Saturday, June 8th, we headed up to the mountains of Alma, CO - the highest incorporated town in North America at 10,578 feet.
This is the house we stayed in.
This portion of the Middle Fork of the South Platte River was right across the road from our house. Kevin couldn't wait to go fishing and went out Saturday night after the kids were asleep. I took this picture of him from the house balcony.
Sunday, June 9th, we went to church in Breckenridge and then let the kids play in the town play area.
Then, after Kellen's nap, we took the kids fishing at Montgomery reservoir. I taught Jenna how to cast all by herself. She got pretty good at it.
Kellen caught his first fish! A rainbow trout.
Monday morning, June 10th, we went to South Park City Museum, a restored 1880s mining town in Fairplay, CO.
The boys in the upper part of the caboose.
Jenna trying out an old school desk.
Kellen can do anything Jenna can do. : )
A little stop at Al-Mart in Alma before heading back to the house for lunch.
Monday afternoon, we went on a little hike.
That Jenna sure can pose!
Rushing snow melt.
This is an old mining building on the hiking route. We recognized this building and rushing water. The more we hiked, the more the hike looked very familiar. Turns out, we stayed in Alma in the summer of 2004, but none of us had remembered the name of the town. We even found the house we stayed in, just across the South Platte from the house of this week!
Not sure what she's doing, but she's cute.
Tuesday, June 11th, we spent basically the whole day swimming at Geremy and Heather's time share in Breckenridge. We had cell phone service in Breckenridge and found out about the Black Forest fire that had started that day. Geremy had stayed home for work and kept us updated as much as he could.
Wednesday, June 12th, we took Kellen and Mima on the hike that we had taken earlier in the week.
Near the beginning of the hike. Rushing water and old mining building.
This is an old cement mixer, not quite sure how it ended up on our hiking route. Maybe from the earlier days when this was a mining area.
So beautiful!
Taking a little rest.
Papa and the boys.
Thursday, June 13, we went swimming again in the morning. While Kevin and Heather went on a more strenuous hike. The planned to hike further up the trail than we had gotten, find the lake that was near the top and fish. What they found was a frozen solid lake!
Kellen enjoyed s'mores after lunch. Chocolate everywhere! Wednesday night, right before we went to bed, we got a reverse 911 call saying that our home was in pre-evacuation status. That means that you should be ready to evacuate. We were glad to be safely out of town, but felt that we would be more glad if we knew that our important things were safe. So, Thursday afternoon, Kevin and I drove 2 hours home, gathered some things and video taped the things we left behind, then drove the 2 hours back.
Friday, June 14th, was opening day at the Breckenridge summer resort. There was a maze.
Jenna and Kevin did bungee jumping (Jenna on left in purple shirt, Kevin on right upside down).
They asked Jenna if she wanted to go high and she said, "yes!" (See video 0523 in "Alma, CO '13" pictures folder.)
I took Kellen home after lunch and the rest stayed for more fun. Jenna did the alpine slide that she said she wouldn't do. And loved it, of course!
Look at all the snow!
Saturday, June 15th, we packed up and came home. It was a fun week. There was lots of bike riding and general craziness enjoyed by all the cousins. Lots of scenic views, fishing, hiking, and good food enjoyed by all. We were glad to be back home, though.
